[-iu'reɲa], Leopoldo Enrique, spanischer Schriftsteller, * Zamora 25. 4. 1852, ✝ Oviedo 13. 6. 1901; veröffentlichte unter dem Pseudonym Clarín; Jurastudium u. a. in Oviedo, wo er ab 1883 Professor für Römisches Recht war, vertrat im Spanien der Restauration schon früh publizistisch militant die liberalen Werte. Als Literaturkritiker war Alas y Ureña hoch geschätzt und gefürchtet. Ein Höhepunkt des spanischen Romans ist sein Werk »La regenta« (1884/85, deutsch »Die Präsidentin«), das, von G. Flaubert beeinflusst, beißend-ironische Kritik an der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft Oviedos übt. Neben einem weiteren Roman (»Su único hijo«, 1890, deutsch »Sein einziger Sohn«) schuf er etwa 60 Erzählungen und Novellen.
